The edge cache of WP Engine can return pages to ClaudeBot without issue (x-cache: HIT). when requests miss the cache, they reach the origin handler and receive a 429 response, creating a confusing mix of 200 and 429 responses for ClaudeBot traffic—obscuring the true extent of the issue.
  4. WP Engine is notably an outlier. Public documentation from Kinsta, Pressable, and Pantheon explicitly states they do not block AI crawlers at the platform level. The CTO of Kinsta confirmed in March 2026 that they “will not block at the platform level” and will not impose charges for bot bandwidth. Pressable explicitly states it “does not currently disallow these bots by default.”
