OVERCOMING COMMON INSTALLATION CHALLENGES WITH BABY GATES
CRUCIAL INSTALLATION ADVISORY
Installing baby gates requires a level of skill; proceeding without the assistance of a qualified professional may lead to hazards and unexpected expenses.
By reading this article, you acknowledge that you have reviewed and accepted the terms and conditions specified here: Website Terms & Conditions.
The scenarios outlined below highlight common installation obstacles I have encountered, which may resonate with your experiences and offer practical solutions.
INSTALLATION ISSUE 1: UNEVEN SURFACE
RESOLVING UNEVEN SURFACE CHALLENGES

-
- Measure the widest point at the top to determine the correct size for the gate and any necessary extensions. (CLICK HERE FOR MEASURING INSTRUCTIONS).
- Once you have the gates/extensions, use an angle grinder fitted with a metal/aluminium disc to cut the gate accurately, adhering to the measurements provided in the reference images above.
- Remove the plastic component from the section of the gate you intend to cut and reinsert it into the cut part to ensure the correct fitting of the tension knob.
- This process will be clearer once you have the gate in your possession.
INSTALLATION ISSUE 2: MOUNTING ON AN UNEVEN WALL
ADDRESSING MOUNTING CHALLENGES ON AN UNEVEN WALL

-
- Ensure that the gate/extensions are properly prepared for installation.
- Use Pratley Putty Quickset to fill any gaps and create a level surface on the wall.
- Allow the Putty to cure completely BEFORE tightening the tension knobs to securely fit the gate using pressure.
- Do not rely on the gate for safety until all steps are finished and the gate has been tested for stability.
INSTALLATION ISSUE 3: OUTDOOR INSTALLATION OF BABY GATES
ADDRESSING OUTDOOR INSTALLATION CHALLENGES FOR BABY GATES
While outdoor installation of baby gates can be a quick and economical option, it may also void the warranty on these products.

I recommend that outdoor installations of baby gates be regarded solely as a temporary and cost-effective measure. This may risk invalidating your warranty on the gates.
-
- Baby gates are specifically designed for indoor use and are not suitable for outdoor conditions due to potential damage from weather elements.
- This limitation is clearly outlined in the warranty documentation accompanying the product.
- Failure to comply with warranty conditions will lead to the loss of warranty protection.
For a durable solution, consider hiring a contractor who specialises in security or latch gates. Although this may involve a higher investment, it is the most effective strategy.
PREPARING THE BABY GATE AND EXTENSIONS FOR OUTDOOR USE:
Disclaimer: None of these measures guarantee complete rust protection; however, they aim to extend the life of the gate in South African weather conditions.
Regular treatment every 1-2 months can significantly reduce the risk of rust.
To minimise rust and moisture retention, follow these guidelines:
-
- Before installation, treat the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit, ensuring to cover surface areas at the base as well.
- Drill holes at the bottom of the gate using an 8mm steel drill bit. This will allow water to drain and prevent rust from forming inside the hollow gate, where moisture may collect at joints, connectors, and tension knobs. The holes will provide ventilation to avert moisture accumulation.
- Apply a light coat of Rustoleum Painters Touch 2X Ultra Cover – Satin Clear 340g, available at takealot.com, to the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit.
- Allow to dry completely (approximately 2 hours), then apply a second coat.
For existing rust:
-
- Spray the affected areas with Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer 291g, following the product instructions.
- Check the product description on takealot.com; you may need to obtain mineral spirits to clean any overspray on non-rusted areas.
- The rust reformer will convert rust to a black colour, which should then be coated with Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Enamel Gloss White 340g, available on takealot.com.
